A note from Erik Kitchenman, USBands Adjudication Coordinator
In 2019 all sub-captions will have a potential of 100 points (tenths). This system-wide application will deeply assist in the consistency of number management and the opportunity for all in our community to speak from the same understanding regarding number application.
This adjustment comes from two years of exploration and acquiring insight from band directors (survey and anecdotally) and the best consultants in our activity. Because of the wide diversity and unique backgrounds of our adjudication pool, there were a variety of approaches with how sheets were applied through a broad range of numbers (100, 200. 300. 400) along with a disparity of multipliers that added an additional layer of confusion. Everyone agreed that it is time to simplify and clarify.
In this new application of 100 in all sub-captions, a tenth will be a tenth and the Criteria Reference system and box ranges will remain the same through the season. This means there will be no sliding scale in 2019 as well.
We understand the progression of the season and a need for reward as the season moves on. There remain two qualifiers involved that must be considered: contest dynamics and positive performance progression. I will be working closely with our Chief Adjudicators and I will be disseminating information to the adjudication community about these factors. But there is no doubt that with this new number system, management becomes much more achievable from contest to contest and weekend to weekend.
The bottom line is that the USBands is a service to you and your ensemble. We want to use the best system possible to assist in how adjudicators evaluate and afford the band director that best possible vehicle to communicate the advantages of a competitive event and life experiences.
We are here for you.
